Four Steps to Managing Fear After a Cancer Diagnosis

Facing a cancer diagnosis can feel like being thrust into the unknown, navigating a labyrinth of fear and uncertainty. In the midst of this daunting journey, it’s essential to find ways to manage fear with grace, humor, and compassion. In this article, we’ll explore five steps to help you navigate the rollercoaster of emotions that accompany a cancer diagnosis, offering a beacon of hope and resilience, even when you’ve received a diagnosis that makes it feel like the whole world stopped.

1. Find Your People:

You don’t have to face this journey alone, my friend. Seek out your people —those kindred spirits who offer unwavering support, understanding, and a willingness to share their own experience. Whether it’s friends, family members, fellow survivors, or furry companions (yes, pets count too!), surround yourself with loving souls who lift you up, make you comfortable, and remind you that you are never alone in this fight.

2. Swim in the Rain:

Amidst the storm clouds of fear and uncertainty, don’t forget to dance in the rain! I know, I know, I know, so cheesy.  Especially during this time in your life, it might not look like actual dancing. But find moments of joy, beauty, and hope amidst the chaos. Whether it’s belting out your favorite song in the shower, indulging in a milkshake, or dancing like nobody’s watching (because let’s face it, they’re probably not!), embrace the simple pleasures that bring light into the darkest of days. Remember, even in the midst of the storm, there is beauty to be found and you have the beautiful eyes to see it.

3. Practice Real Self-Care:

Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential, especially during challenging times. Treat yourself with the kindness, compassion, and care you deserve. Indulge in activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, and really, only you know what that looks like.  For me, it meant getting in the pool as much as possible.  A lot of times I was just tucked into a corner watching my daughter play. But, I felt like my pre-cancer self and it gave me hope that I would be able to keep going. Prioritize your well-being (sleep?!) and make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine.

4. Choose Love Over Fear:

In the face of fear, choose love. I honestly used to hate when people said stuff like this to me, but I get it.  Love for yourself, love for those around you, and love for the precious gift of life itself. Over time, that has felt like less interaction with Dr. Google (fear). And more deep breathing on nights I can’t sleep (love).  Less daydreaming about the tortuous end (fear) and now now I choose to send love notes into the universe through the alphabet (love). This looks like A – Ana, I wish love. B – Ben, I wish you happiness, until I get to Z – Zoe, I hope your are happy today.   Cultivating love during a time like this is a small miracle. But, love is the most potent antidote to fear, and it has the power to transform even the darkest of days with moments of light and hope.
